We apologize for posting last-minute, but here's an interesting offer for German (or Germany-based) postdoctoral researchers or doctoral candidates in the fields of visual, literary, or performing arts: Goethe-Institut Israel, in partnership with the Polonsky Academy at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, invites applications for a six-week academic residency for postdoctoral researchers or doctoral candidates in the fields of visual, literary, or performing arts, from or based in Germany. The successful applicant will join the community of scholars at the Polonsky Academy from 9 November to 21 December 2025 to pursue original research in a vibrant interdisciplinary environment and will have opportunities for immersion in the diverse cultural scene of this historically and culturally unique city through exchanges with local artists and cultural institutions. This year, two Falling Walls labs took place in Israel. Falling Walls is a research & innovation pitching competition, where young researchers present ground-breaking work addressing urgent global issues. The winner of each competition will represent Israel in the global Falling Walls summit this November in Berlin! The first Falling Walls Lab was organized by ScienceAbroad - The Organization of Israeli Scientists Abroad & GIF - The German Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research & Development. It was held online on July 14, 2025. Dr. Natalie Fardian-Melamed from Columbia University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering took the 1st place with her outstanding pitch: "Falling the Wall of Invisible Forces” As a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellow, Dr. Fardian Melamed’s cutting-edge research in nanoscale sensing holds exciting promise for biology, medicine, and physics. The 2nd place took Dr. Shai Zilberzwig-Tal (The Broad Institute of MIT) - for her impactful vision of democratizing mRNA vaccine production. The 3rd place went to Dr. Elad Shniderman ( Technion - Israel Institute of Technology & Bar-Ilan University) - for his unique work on human synchronization through music. The second Falling Walls Lab Israel was organized by Anne Gladitz from the DAAD, together with Liat Mandelbaum Shor of The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanitiesהאקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים. The academy hostet the event on this last July 24th. It was truly inspiring to see such brilliant minds come together. Incredibly talented students and researchers who presented groundbreaking ideas, embodying curiosity, innovation, and the courage to dream big. Massive congratulations to the incredible winner, Hadas Omer of הטכניון - מכון טכנולוגי לישראל | Technion - for her truly "wall-breaking" project, "Breaking the Walls of Cardiovascular Disease!" This is a significant step forward in both medicine and science. Many thanks to all the talented participants and to the distinguished panel of judges for their invaluable contributions, insightful guidance, and discerning choices. DAAD Israel Alumni Gathering 2025 To mark the 100th anniversary of the DAAD German Academic Exchange Service and 60 years of diplomatic relations between Israel and Germany, we were proud to host a special alumni gathering on July 18, 2025. Despite the challenges and delays caused by the war, we were grateful that we could finally come together. DAAD alumni from across Israel gathered at the Adelis Conference Center, beautifully situated on the banks of the Yarkon River in Tel Aviv, to participate in an inspiring and engaging program. The event opened with welcome remarks from the DAAD Israel Team — Mr. Assaf Bloom and Ms. Natalia Suponitskaya — followed by greetings from Dr. Evelyn Obele, Science Attaché at the German Embassy in Tel Aviv. A brilliant keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Fania Oz-Salzberger, Professor Emerita at the University of Haifa, who explored the evolving nature of German-Israeli relations. The formal part of the program was beautifully accompanied by music performed by DAAD alumni Dr. Ron Merhavi (double bass) and Dr. Itamar Ringel (viola), adding an artistic and personal touch to the celebration. Mr. Hauke Nehrhoff from the DAAD Alumni Division then presented the wide range of alumni funding opportunities currently available. The second part of the day focused on networking and exchange. Alumni were invited to participate in discussion groups, each led by an experienced moderator: 1. Natural Sciences - hosted by Prof. Ronny Bartsch (Bar-Ilan University), long-time DAAD partner and selection committee member 2. Humanities and Arts - moderated by Ms. Anne Gladitz, DAAD Lecturer at the Tel Aviv University Language Division 3. Social Sciences - led by Prof. Sandra Destradi, DAAD Guest Lecturer at Reichman University, Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy, and Strategy. Throughout the event, participants were also invited to explore a poster exhibition showcasing selected works by DAAD Israel alumni in recent years — a testament to the impact of their academic and professional contributions. Looking ahead, we hope to establish the DAAD Alumni Gathering as an annual tradition. It was particularly encouraging to see the strong interest in founding a DAAD Alumni Association in Israel — a step that promises to further strengthen the alumni network and enhance its visibility and engagement. A heartfelt thank you to all our alumni and partners who helped make this celebration so special.
